The Imagination project

Philosopher José Medina has famously said that "Imagination is not a luxury or a privilege, but a necessity." But though we take time to nurture our imagination as children, as we grow and get caught up in the hustle and bustle of work and school we often neglect imagination and relegate it to the background of our lives. This Spring 2025 project aims to correct this neglect. The aims are twofold: (1) to highlight the importance of imagination and creativity to the world today; and (2) to develop a series of activities (games, puzzles, videos, etc.) with which people can engage to allow their own imaginations to flourish. For example, one such activity will be to create an "imagination deck" that will include 52 short prompts (visual or linguistic) that get people imagining.

TV DIY - Write Your Own Episode

Facilitator: Kate Loveless

Learn about TV writing and script structure by creating your very own episode of a popular sitcom in a writers’ room made up of your fellow students. This workshop will take place in 2 sessions over a 1 week period in Fall 2023 — during the first meeting we will come up with an episode idea, break story as a group, and assign individual scenes to be written by the following week, and during the second meeting we will compile the scenes and read the full episode together. NOTE: workshop will require some knowledge of the show Schitt’s Creek (stream it on Hulu, Amazon, Apple TV, Freevee, & Vudu before workshop begins).

Kate Loveless attended the University of Southern California where she majored in Narrative Studies and minored in American Popular Culture and Cinema. During her time at USC, Kate also began performing and producing standup and improv comedy in Los Angeles as well as working various internships in the entertainment industry. After graduating in 2014, Kate leveraged her role as a set PA on a film set into an assistant position in television and worked her way up in the writers' room until 2020 when she received her first WGA "written by" credit. She has continued working as a freelance writer and producer since then.

Fall 2023 Podcasting Workshop

The Gould Center is excited to announce a new opportunity for Fall 2023: our Podcast Workshop. Students accepted to this program will have the opportunity to work with two podcasting experts, Chris Hoff and Sam Harnett, in a series of five workshops on the essentials of podcast and audio production. Each workshop will introduce students to different aspects of podcasting and will teach them the skills necessary to put together a professional podcast episode or radio piece. No prior podcasting experience is necessary.

THE WAR IN UKRAINE SOCIAL ENGAGEMENT PROJECT

The Gould Center War in Ukraine Social Engagement Project seeks to bring together 7-10 CMC students this Fall 2022 from any major or class to spend 8-10 hours per week exploring the history, motivations, and impact of the Russian Invasion of Ukraine, humanitarian relief efforts, and practical steps to help raise awareness about the war and ameliorate the suffering through various forms of student, faculty and community social engagement.

The project team responsibilities and assignments will revolve around 4 components: (1) research on the above factors, (2) creation of awareness campaigns, (3) modest relief and fundraising efforts, and (4) 5Cs social engagement activities.

Supervised by Professor Gaston Espinosa. This project is for the fall only, but there is a possibility of it being extended through the spring. Application is open to CMC students of all class years. More information about the project can be found here.

STUDENT ADVISORY BOARD

The Gould Center Student Advisory Board shaped the direction of the Center by providing student input into the Center’s programming, events, and on-campus presence. The Student Advisory Board was an excellent opportunity to get involved with the Center outside research and fellowships.
