Horror as Witness: Indigenous Narrative of Colonialism, Trauma and Survival

  • Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum (map)

Gould’s 2026-2027 Quinones Lecture

Ramona Emerson—Assistant Professor in the University of New Mexico’s Department of Film and Digital Arts and author of the National Book Award–longlisted novel Shutter and its follow-up, Exposure—explores Indigenous horror as a framework for understanding Indigenous historical experiences of settler violence. She examines how the genre renews oral traditions of hope, vision, compassion while engaging themes of violence, trauma, revenge, and redemption.
